Christmas is an opportunity to add a whole lot of fun to your on air look. Recalling Christmas cartoons of old, I wanted to animate 2D characters exploring a 3D world for this new batch of Christmas idents on Viasat Film HD. We loved the idea that these characters were illustrations from the wrapping paper, having adventures in your living room after dark. For us it brought back that old school magic, whilst really engaging with our audience.

Working on the concept and initial art direction, I then co-produced the idents with the awesome Bridie Reid at Viasat. We then brought our ideas to Studio Hansa (www.studiohansa.com) who took the project and ran with it. They refined all the creative and came up with the beautiful design and animation you see above. We also approached the very talented Louis Neubert to realise our characters. Louis was a dream to work with, he is a super talented illustrator and animator. Go check out his work (www.louisneubert.co.uk)

Once we decided on our wrapping paper concept, we were tasked with finding the best way to execute the idea. Louis decided to initially animate the characters in Flash and add textures to each frame in Photoshop. The folks at Studio Hansa then imported these frames into After Effects. The 3D living room was created in Cinema 4D by Studio Hansa, and once we had figured out shots, created a dummy 3D animatic. This ensured that when each character was being animated in Flash, they knew they would seamlessly interact with the 3D environment.
