This was a fun one! Mercury Studios (Universal) approached me to direct a lyric music video for The Rolling Stones track ‘Happy’. This 1972 classic is from the seminal Stones’ album ‘Exile On Main Street’, from their glorious psychedelic heyday.
Featuring guitarist Keith Richards on lead vocals, it was released as the second single from the album in June 1972, entering the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 69 on 15 July 1972 and reached No. 22 on 19 August 1972.
I was excited to play around with all things psychedelic for this animation, using old concert footage to rotoscope little loops of Mick Jagger, Keith and Ronnie Wood. Utilising colour palettes of the era, I explored animating patterns and shapes that could belong to that time. These were married with treated concert footage, along with 3D text that uses the famous lips icon.
